Katharine DeAntonio
Drawing Instructor
Katharine DeAntonio is pleased to join the faculty of St. Philip’s Academy as Drawing
Instructor. She is excited for the opportunity to do what she loves: cultivating in students both skillful hands and discerning eyes. She began drawing before she could walk and has not stopped since. Classically trained in draftsmanship at the Florence Academy of Art, she brings two years of experience teaching drawing in a classical Christian school setting.
Miss DeAntonio loves teaching the practical disciplines of draftsmanship, including careful
observation, a sense of proportion, and control of one’s materials. She regards these as essential skills for the artist, which also cultivate habits of observation, discipline, and attention that are beneficial in all areas of learning. As a third-generation artist, shaped by the example of her father and grandfather, both professional oil painters, she values the continuity of artistic tradition and the faithful stewardship of learned skill.
Within the rich context of a classical Christian education in historic Charleston, she also seeks to cultivate in her students an appreciation for art, particularly the heritage of Western art history, as a vital expression of truth, goodness, and beauty across time. Through the study of this rich tradition and their own artistic practice, she hopes to guide students to recognize and delight in beauty as an important part of God’s self-revelation. In her classroom, students are taught not only to draw well, but also to see well, perceiving order, harmony, and beauty as elements of a world that points beyond itself to its Creator.
Miss DeAntonio is a member of St. Philip’s Church, where she sings in the choir and serves on the music department staff. When she is not drawing, she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her family.
